Working in the IoT with Trevally Group
On this week’s episode of the Real World IoT Podcast, host Ken Briodagh discusses the status of employment and what is like working in the IoT Industry with Executive Recruiter in Wireless & IoT at Trevally Group, Michele Williams. Trevally Group is a recent spin out from the previous firm that Michele worked with, but despite being a relatively new firm, Michele has been recruiting in the Mobile and Wireless Technology industry since about 2007. About 6 or 7 years ago, she began focusing down on a more niche sector of telematics and then to IoT which is now a huge piece on its own.
The Current Job Market
Over time we have seen a shift in how people working within the IoT are hiring or bringing in new talent. It used to be a small industry where new companies were growing and making their move to bring in people from other competing companies in the same space who had been doing the same types of things. Now the power has gone from the employers to the employees because there is no longer this easy low hanging fruit of picking those people off from other companies. With such a low unemployment rate as well, we see that this is providing a lot of opportunity for new people to find their way into jobs within the IoT industry.
The IoT Industry has grown and expanded over the years to a point where now saying you’re an IoT professional means nothing. Since there has been this switch of power between those hiring and those looking to be hired, it is important that those looking for a position in the IoT Industry make themselves stand out in a way that makes sense for the specific sectors of the IoT they are looking to. This can be most effective by showing what you have done to produce content or revenue or efficiency in other companies and relate that to what the potential future employer may be looking for.
Michele and Ken see there may be a particular struggle with business development positions due to the changing industry as well as how different companies handle their approach. With the current market being quite slow to understand and convert to IoT solutions to improve their lives or businesses, it is important to have a good business strategist paving a path for these companies to best find where they will do the most good and make the most money. Those who make it clear to companies what they have done in the past to prove they have the ability to pave this path will capitalize on the opportunities provided within the IoT.
Strong B2B partnerships and the desire for connectivity will carry this industry forward. While the population may be growing, with the support of IoT, the world is getting smaller every day and it is an exciting time to be in the middle of it.
